P.Skrabec.gif (49118 bytes)        FR STANISLAV ŠKRABEC'S COMMITTEE bears the name of our franciscan confrere, Slovenian linguist FR. STANISLAV ŠKRABEC. He was born in 1844 in the village of Hrovača near Ribnica, lived in the Monastery of Kostanjevica for more than 42 years and died in Ljubljana in 1918. In Slovenian language he defended the tradition and is known as the founder of Slovenian ortography. During his years on Kostanjevica he was a teacher, a rector of the Monastery's High School (which was recognized by the government) and the editor of the magazin Cvetje z vrtov sv. Frančiška (The Flowers of the Garden of St. Francis). On the back cover of this magazin he was publishing the articles about language. In 1916 he had to leave Kostanjevica (1st World War) and died in Ljubljana in 1918.

        Fr. Stanislav Škrabec's Committee was founded in 1994. It's mission is to promote his spiritual and liguistic herritage. The founder was Fr. Nikolaj Žvokelj, the guardian of the Monastery of Kostanjevica with the help of Ms. Anica Ličen. The president of the Committee is always the acting guardian of the Monastery, the main working power is still Ms. Anica Ličen with the help of Tatjana Ličen, who is employed by the Committee.

        The Committee gathered and published all Škrabec's linguistic articles and writings in four books. Mr. Janko Moder put together a comprehensive Index. The Committee also published some other books about Fr. Škrabec. Every few years a symposium about Fr. Škrabec's work is organized under the guidance of dr. Jože Toporišič followed by the publication of the discussions of the participants.

        Fr. Stanislav Škrabec's Committee also put on the innitiative to renovate the Monastery's Library. The renovation and the catalogization of the book collection is finaced by the County of Nova Gorica which also takes care of the renovation of the Monastery and of the promotion of our activities.
